Blocks
Year: 2021Duration: 6 months

A 2022 BAFTA Awards nominee, Blocks is a 10-minute interactive experience about an artist rebuilding his imagination after loss. Players step inside a fractured mind and reconstruct it through performative gestures — a stationary VR piece that treats the body, not the controller, as the primary instrument of storytelling.

Scope
Blocks originated as an ambitious experiment in crafting immersive VR narratives. Developed within 6 months with a team of 2 in a graduate game production class, the project required rigorous scoping and timeline management. I helped drive the overarching product vision and execution, ensuring we navigated the constraints of a rapid production cycle without compromising the quality of the final experience.

Process
Bridging the gap between engineering and user experience, I kicked off development by building a series of small, playable interaction prototypes to test and iterate on various VR mechanics. I then collaborated closely with our narrative designer to weave these surreal, tactile prototypes into a cohesive story exploring the emotional nuances of internal creative struggle. This phase required a deeply agile approach—writing code, refining design elements, and facilitating cross-functional communication so that every technical mechanic directly supported the narrative goals.

Impact
Ultimately, the project far exceeded its original academic scope. Blocks was selected as a Top 3 Finalist for the 2022 BAFTA Student Awards in the Immersive category. Chosen from a record-breaking 715 submissions across 134 schools and 36 countries, our single-semester prototype successfully competed against projects developed by larger teams over multiple years. This recognition stands as a strong testament to our streamlined production strategy, robust technical execution, and cohesive design vision.
